September 30, 2008 --

September 20th, 2008 started off as a spectacular fall day in Wrentham, MA. There was a slight fall breeze as the leaves began to change. Energy was in the air. Purple balloons lined the streets. Organizing was well underway by 9AM and within a few hours, the open field was changed into a purple area crowded with buzzing people full of hope for a better future.

Over 140 walkers and many more supporters arrived to raise awareness and valuable funds for research. Participants ranged from toddlers to elders. Some even took the walk up a notch and tried to turn it into a competition-anything to have a little extra fun!

The festivities began with a presentation from Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown. He presented walk organizer, Casey Gray, with proclamations from both the Senate and Governor’s offices declaring September as Chiari Awareness Month in the state of Massachusetts. He expressed his concern and newly found understanding about Chiari Malformation. Following his proclamation, Ray D’Alonzo, author of Contents Under Pressure: One Man’s Triumph to Conquer Chiari Syndrome, gave a speech about the ins and outs of Chiari. Those in attendance who knew little about Chiari left the event with a new understanding of Chiari and Syringomyelia.

The actual walk was enjoyed by all. Many suffered through their pain and were able to conquer the walk. For those that were overcome by physical ailments, others including strangers were there to support them. The walkers showed unconditional support and understanding for one another. It was amazing how such strangers could come together and support each other. Lasting friendships were made by all and no one in attendance will ever be alone in their Chiari struggles again.

Following the walk, participants enjoyed pizza, water, fruit, and snacks provided by Eagle Brook Saloon, the Big Apple, and the Gray Family. It was a great time for those to get to know one another and share their struggles. Everyone has a different story but we all have things in common. When everyone’s stomachs were full, it was time for the raffle. Memorabilia from the Boston Red Sox, New England Revolution, Boston Bruins, and Boston Celtics was awarded. Casey Gray thanked everyone for coming and finished off the walk with a speech full of hope. She described Chiari as an opportunity by referencing a Thomas Carlyle quote: “Opportunity-The block of granite which was an obstacle in the pathway of the weak becomes a stepping-stone in the pathway of the strong. That block of granite is often nothing more than a decision." She finished by including the quote “Never give up. This may be your moment for a miracle.”

For those who suffer from Chiari and its related conditions, times may be tough, but remember to not give up. We are all in this battle together. We succeed each day in persevering through the heartache. Continue to make Chiari Malformation an opportunity to better yourself and those around you. Do not let Chiari conquer you-Conquer Chiari!

Thank you for all those attended the Massachusetts Walk and walks across the country. It is a huge step in the right direction. Each and everyone affected by Chiari will be forever grateful. In time, we will all Conquer Chiari!

-- Casey Gray
