Ed Note:  Because of the importance of raising money for research, the next few issues will contain an article with tips on how to organize a specific type of fundraiser.  If you have ideas for this column, or would like to write one, please contact director@conquerchiari.org

Often, people call Conquer Chiari and say they would like to raise money for research, but are not sure what to do.  One of the best ways to approach fundraising is to utilize your existing strengths, talents, and social networks.  For example, a dancer may want to enlist her dance studio in a fundraising event, or a musician could consider holding a benefit concert.

By playing to your strength, and leveraging talents you already have, the logistics of fundraising become easier and the whole process is more fun.  As an added bonus, there is usually an existing support network ready to jump in and help the cause.

Another key to successful fundraising is to leverage the Conquer Chiari On-Line Meeting Place to identify other Chiari people in your area interested in getting involved.  Fundraising is a lot of work and you can never have enough volunteers.  Plus, combining different social networks of friends and supporters in the same geographic area usually leads to a much more successful event financially.

A third key to fundraising is to take a long-term view.  The first time you try anything, especially a fundraising event, there can be a learning curve. The most successful fundraising events are often ones that are held every year and grow over time.

Shelby is an example of one girl who is using her talents for fundraising.  With the help of her mom, Tina, Shelby is selling her artwork to raise money for Chiari research.  Through her artwork, and by enlisting the support of her networks, Shelby has already raised over $1,000 for research!  Way to go Shelby!!!!
